Police Intimidation
Well, I'm sure it happens here in Paris...it just seems a little hard to imagine, considering the tools of the trade. Imagine this car bearing down on yours, lights blaring. It almost seems like incentive to floor it and pop off to rob a bank on your way out of town.
Of course, the police at the station across from us are prone to simply standing on the corner three steps from the station door, waving cars to stop and then checking drivers' papers. Maybe the cops are too embarrassed to get behind the wheel. Or maybe they think police cars have better uses.

Amy, I was only in Paris for two days back in 1986, but I was impressed by the police there. They were multilingual and courteous, and predisposed to make things flow smoothly. A fellow on a big single-cylinder dual-purpose motorcycle saw the cop I was talking to (I was lost), waved, and then wheelied away down Champs de Elysees; the officer was just amused.
There are small cars in Europe which will run and hide from our American notion of a sports car. It only has to be big enough for a radio and a submachine gun - which police in Europe actually have as standard issue to some "street" units.
By the way - what does gas cost over there? I have heard it's over $6/gallon in England now.

No idea what it costs. Walk or take the Metro everywhere.
And I'm not really casting aspersions on the police. Just funny that they have what looks like the car of a Santa Monica College freshman to chase crooks in.

Standard gasoline is 1.3 € per liter. That works out to $5.94 per USgallon. Think about that....

That explains the popularity of diesel, at only 1 €/litre. BTW, it took me a while to get the point of the original post. I'm so used to seeing these things that I didn't immediately get that this was "MY cops have bigger cars than YOUR cops". Playground taunting time, is it?
